Undoubtedly iPhone is hit. Nowadays, about 20.000 units are sold per day coming to a total of 4 millions in 8 months. Apple reached 19.5% of the SmartPhone market in the USA.
Several reasons led me to purchase a cell phone. And since I’ve been a Mac user for some years I thought that the best option would be to buy the model from Apple. Unquestionably, it was a big decision!
In no time the device became my main tool for management and productivity.
Everyday I wake up at the sound of the iPhone. I set the timer to ring early in the morning with the “harp” ring tone which is smooth. I am a sensitive guy in the morning, and somehow waking up with a sound that is similar to a fire alarm does not make me happy. I quickly check the “Weather” to read the forecast for the day.
Twice a week I go to fitness center in the morning to watch my daughter’s´ swimming class. I have one email MAC account and three other IMAP accounts set on my iPhone.
While my little girl dives with some funny rubber animal made in China I, between one and other wave of hands, take advantage of the WIFI connection to take a quick look at my e-mails and my agenda for the day. I also use that time to check my list of next actions.
In my daily routine I use the GTD (Get Things Done) methodology, which was written by David Allen, to organize my day. At the Mac I use the “Taskpaper” to manage my list of assignments. Unlike other GTD pieces of software Taskpaper was developed to simulate the use of paper sheets and that’s why I prefer it. It is a simple and effective method. To synchronize all the pieces of information with the iPhone Notes I use the application AFPd and the scripts developed by Spatialviews.com.
My work model allows me work anywhere on the planet as long I have an internet connection. I try not to work two days in a row in the same place.
In the last couple of weeks I’ve been working in Coffes. The calm and introspective environment inspires creativity. As I like to work on different places the Google Maps would be very helpful if I known any street names. I am the kind of guy who knows how get there but cannot explain it. MacBook Pro and Wacon tablet are wonderful tools and they got all the mobility that I enjoy. When I am not at the studio I design until my battery dies, it lasts about three and a half hours. While I charge the batteries for a new cycle of work I use the time to chat with my co-workers at YellowIcon. On iPhone to chat I normally use two programs: S4iPhone that connects to Skype network and the Jive Talk to connect to the MSN and AIM networks. There are others great options of online messengers like Meebo and also some native applications like Mobile Chat and Apollo. I’d rather use Beejive because it allows me to keep the connection for 2 hours even after I have closed Safari. I also utilize that time to make my daily phone calls.
Close to the end of the afternoon I go to the Studio. There I do some revisions, management and art direction of the developing projects. To do so I use the Notes which later I will synchronize with Taskpaper and MacBook.
I usually listen to Audio Books while I drive. It is a new format or me. It’s being very helpful, especially because I have the chance to “read” those books which I normally wouldn’t have time to. I have just finished “The Kite Runner”, best-seller written by Khaled Hosseini, an Afghan writer. I am starting to listen to “The Servant: A Simple Story about the True Essence of Leadership” by James C. Hunter.
Although there are no good text editors to iPhone yet, it is still my main writing tool. This article that you are reading now was created in two parts. Some of it was made in the Macbook and the other on the iPhone. I use the Mail as an editor. I create a new message and save it as a draft. Thanks to the iMap configuration accounts any modification made in Mail, MacBook or iPhone are automatically synchronized.
Besides being an excellent tool for productivity at work the iPhone has become my fitness center partner.
I should say that I am not a fantastic athlete neither a big fan of gyms. In fact I like to feel good about my body. I don’t belong to the group of people who are trying to look like magazines models (people who are paid not to eat and in no way looks like a healthy human being).
My daily training generally lasts between one and a half and two hours divided in aerobics and weight lifting exercises. I start the workout with 30 minutes of treadmill or elliptical and I also use that time to reply some pending e-mails l. When there aren’t many messages I watch an episode of one of my favorites TV shows: Lost, Heroes or Dexter. While I do my weight lifting exercises I usually listen to podcasts related to psychology or entrepreneurship. I close my workout session with another cycle of 30 minutes of aerobic exercises such as bike or elliptical.
While I do these last 30 minutes I use the Books.app to read the e-Book “Ozio Creativo” from the Italian writer Domenico de Masi.
Besides the applications mentioned above I also use: Lockbox which is a great password and credit card number manager .PDF View. I understand that many e-Books are only available in PDF .The Books is a great application, but unfortunately it is not compatible with this format. Generally speaking I prefer text notes, however, when ideas emerge in situations in which it is impossible to write, Voice Notes is very useful.
Many new and interesting programs will appear after the release of the official kit for application development for the iPhone.
